Hugh Richard Bonneville Williams was born on 10th November 1963, to a urologist father and a nurse mother in Paddington, London, England.
He attended Sherborne School, a prestigious independent school in Dorset. Studied theology at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Trained for acting at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

His memoir “Playing Under the Piano: From Downton to Darkest Peru” was published in 2022, giving funny and moving insights into his life and career.
